Daniel Ashley Jewell, who made a fortune with his prosperous cotton mill on the Ogeechee River beginning in 1857, funded the building of this beautiful church. It was originally known as the Missionary Baptist Church of Christ at Jewell.

A young man by the name of John R. Gunn (born August 17, 1877) was licensed to preach by this church in 1891. His parents are buried in the adjacent cemetery. In 2012 and 2013 his most recent books were published.
