Powell Farm, Lanier County

The Powell farmhouse is located just north of Lakeland. It’s an interesting vernacular form which immediately caught my eye as I was driving toward Pearson. It’s part of an historic farmstead that is presently listed for sale. The house appears to date to the late 19th century, perhaps the 1870s.

Two pack houses or seed barns are located on the property.

A nice tobacco barn also survives.

Update: Sadly, as of 2019, the farm has been demolished, with not a building left as I understand it.

Check out the old school in Stockton! Would love to see your shots of it and learn more about it!

I’m looking for an area just like this for a photoshoot I’m having soon! I’m a photographer from SC and my client lives in GA. Can anyone tell me if these barns are still standing today?!

Jesse, I believe some of the barns have been taken down. Try The Ford Farm in Lanier County, GA. It’s a beautiful backdrop for photos and they host weddings, etc. They have a website. Tell them I sent you if you call.
      Thanks,

Brian, Come back to Lanier County any time and ride and check out the area. I’ve lived here all my life and am still discovering areas that I never knew existed. Some of the old churches are also very interesting…You’d probably like the history behind “Burnt Church” and its cemetery is full of history as well. Our local historian, Nell Roquemore, would be a fantastic guide…She’s one of our greatest treasures! Looking forward to seeing more of Lakeland and Lanier County!

Brian, our family moved on the Jo Powell farm in the fall of 1955. our Dad farmed the land until 1970 then Parents built a house in Lakeland, Ga. & moved there. Dad passed away almost 20 years ago Mom passed last Nov.
Dad planted tobacco & corn. plus a 3 acre garden. there were 6 siblings 4 girls & 2 boys.the house had a bed room downstairs & 3 upstairs. the girls had one bedroom the boys the other. we used the small bedroom to hang our clothes.their are so many memories in that house! the small house behind the big one was where we washed our clothes on a wringer washing machine. the big house has a hall between the bedroom downstairs & the living room . also between the kitchen & dinning room. We had our Mom’s 80th Birthday celebrations there in 2001. thank you for sharing the pictures!

Thanks for the memories, Mrs. Doris! I loved your Mama and Daddy, and your brother, Bryant, was one of my Daddy’s best friends when they were young. Your Daddy always had the best vegetables around…just as your Mama had some of the best cooking! Fine people that are missed.

I”ve coveted this property for many years, Brian. My wife and I have photographed it several times…have to win the lottery to buy the 1600 acres listed. Guy

It’s wonderful, isn’t it Guy? They said they would subdivide, but I don’t know if they would just sell the house and surrounding yard.

Very nice Brian! The long overhangs on the gable ends make this house look a lot like a 2 story double-pen house. If so it could easily be pre-1850 and have original log walls covered by later the lap siding! It would certainly be nice to take a closer look if you could.
