Pierce County Jail, 1894, Blackshear

This served as the county jail until 1926, when another facility was constructed near the courthouse. This facility served as the city jail until 1976, as well as police headquarters. It has been empty for many years and will hopefully be restored in the near future.

Thank u for the time and effort to do this. Its nice to look back at thi g of the town i was born in. It makes me miss home. I go back every vpl yrs to see my parents. But have been gone from there 14 yrs. Seeing this makes me happy and sad at the same time. I miss home. Again thank you.

John W. Guss researched and wrote a history of this jail many years ago. The Chamber of Commerce has a copy of the research. Blackshear, Georgia is located in Southeast Georgia, Pierce County, near the Okefenokee Swamp. The idea of making it into a museum is a GREAT idea!
