Pierce County Jail, 1894, Blackshear

This served as the county jail until 1926, when another facility was constructed near the courthouse. This facility served as the city jail until 1976, as well as police headquarters. It has been empty for many years and will hopefully be restored in the near future.

John W. Guss researched and wrote a history of this jail many years ago. The Chamber of Commerce has a copy of the research. Blackshear, Georgia is located in Southeast Georgia, Pierce County, near the Okefenokee Swamp. The idea of making it into a museum is a GREAT idea!

There is a Lake Blackshear on the west side of Georgia. Who were the lake and town named after if anyone?
