Dorough Building, 1905, Royston

This was first home to Cunningham’s Furniture and became Carter’s Hardware in 1930. It’s presently the home of the Old Corner Hardware Store Sandwich Shop.

This place is a nice little restaurant now. The building attached to it on the right there with the tin top burned last fall 2021 and is now completely gutted. At one time it was stuffed with Georgia Bulldog bean bag chairs. I have photos of that. I am really enjoying your site here. I have made art on my southern roots & tall tales for many years and film photographs as well. If you are ever back in Elbert County again, let me know. My home is 130 years old with what I was told a slave shack/smoke house out back. It was a part of a row of slave shacks that the local fire department burned down for practice many years ago. My shack is the only one left standing, but down the street, back up in the woods a spell is another row I believe might be more. One of the old shacks used to house a black lady named Mary Bell that would wash all the kids in the neighborhood out in a tub in the yard. Black kids and white kids got washed by this lady with lye soap. The lady that told me this story was one of those kids and she still lives here.

I wish I knew. It’s most commonly known as the Old Corner Hardware Store, but according to the National Register of Historic Places, it was originally the Dorough Building. Please update if you find out anything, and I will do the same. Thanks.
