This saddlebag cottage in Johnson Hummock was the home of Bennie Johnson (1906-1987) and Viola P. Johnson (1919-2001). I believe the house has been restored since I photographed it.

Bennie & Viola Johnson House, 1925, Sapelo Island
Benny and Viola Johnson’s House was a beautiful and rare example of a two room Sapelo cottage with a tabby fireplace. Unfortunately it has had an addition built onto it that had more square feet than the original cottage. I will never understand how the McIntosh County Historic Committee and the Building and Zoning ever allowed this to happen. The cottage in its original form is unrecognizable.
