New York Store, Oglethorpe

This historic general store likely derived its name from an assertion that anything you could get anything here that you could get in New York. Though the name seems out of place in Oglethorpe, such names were a common marketing angle at one time. This store likely dates to the end of the 19th or beginning of the 20th century.

Several years ago my husband farmed land near the New York Store. We lived on the east side of Montezuma. He sent a worker with equipment only to find when he arrived the worker was nowhere in sight. He was told Frank did not stop but kept going. My husband drove up the highway to look for him. When he caught up with Frank and asked where he was going. Frank replied he didn’t think this was the correct New York and he was headed for the big New York.
