This fine Greek Revival townhouse is one of the architectural highlights of Greenville Street, in one of the oldest residential historic districts in Newnan. It was built by Dr. J. T. Reese, an early druggist in the community. Newnan was known as a hospital town during the Civil War, and this was one of the houses where injured soldiers were taken for care.
The house is also associated with the Umberger family and known as the Reese-Umberger House. The colonnade was likely added in the early 1900s when the Neoclassical movement was in full swing.

Newnan, if my knowledge of the past is correct, was the 40th richest town for it’s size in America. If you travel by or through Newnan be sure to try Sprayberry’s Barbeque at the tip of Platinum Point. Warning – the sauce is vinegar based and the best I have ever had. Request the sauce be heated up like it was before it changed hands. And omg the onion rings are to die for.
Years ago, my wife who was from LaGrange, and I traveled through old Newnan. I always looked forward to the trip because there were so many old mansions still in existence. LaGrange had many as well. All too often old houses are allowed to just waste away. If the roof goes, soon the rest of the house will follow until there is nothing left but a pile of rubble.
A magnificent example of Greek Revival!
A lot of rich people must live in Newman judging by the homes you post.
