Filling Station & Garage, Tennille

The old filling stations and garages that helped define America’s evolution into an automobile-centered culture, built from the 1920s-1950s, are getting quite scarce, though many have been repurposed in recent years. This one, with Mission Revival style details, is located right in the middle of downtown Tennille. There’s another historic station adjacent to it, but I was unable to get a photograph. I’m not sure if this was affiliated with a national franchise or just a local business.

Sadly, this building is set for demolition in the near future if the plans in place continue. The city of Tennille plans on demoing for an exapansion of the city park that is nextdoor. It would be cool if somehow they could reuse the building, but considering that the state that it is in (even the brickwork is coming apart under the old awning), the ultimate destruction may be the best course of action.

This is an amazing little place. You know the State of Georgia could bring a tide of tourism to its state if they brought these places back to life. Is there a State body that takes care of these great historic buildings ________________________________
