The Enigma High School Gymnasium in Enigma, Georgia, was constructed in 1952 (according to an AI-generated response), along with a new cafeteria and kindergarten. Although the primary school building at the site—a large brick structure built in 1926—burned down in 1973, the gymnasium and cafeteria were spared. I believe a brick building in front of the gym may have been the cafeteria but haven’t been able to confirm.

Mr. Brown: How about a post that tells us how Enigma got its unusual name?
I’ve always wondered that! It’s an enigma to me.
🙂
My Dad and his brother used to walk barefoot down the dirt road to get to this gym and play basketball with other farm boys…after a full day of working in the fields!
Almost bought a house there in 2019 — loved the name.
Used to pass that gym all the time back in the 1970s when headed from Albany to both my grandparents’ houses in different parts of Berrien County — it was one of the landmarks that said “we’re almost there!” My dad said he played basketball in that gym, but if it was built in 1952, I’m not sure how that was possible. He graduated high school in 1948 and was in Germany with the USAF in 1952.
Scott-That date came from an AI response, as I could find nothing else about it anywhere. It’s very possible that it was built earlier. Thanks.
At one time my family’s former wholesale hardware business in Savannah had a small customer there, Enigma Hardware. That was a long time ago (50 years or so). This is one of several small towns in rural Georgia with unusual names, along with Climax, Dacula, Egypt, Montezuma and Tusculum.
I didn’t know an Enigma, Georgia, existed until I saw a photo of Harry Crews posing by its city limits sign. I read that Enigma is fictional but it is very real. Thanks!
