Canoochee River, Claxton

A tranquil riverside scene showcasing a calm water surface reflecting the surrounding trees and fallen branches in a wooded area.

The Canoochee, which originates in Emanuel County, is the largest tributary of the Ogeechee, which it joins near Savannah. It flows southeastward along the boundaries of Candler and  Evans counties, then passes through Fort Stewart before joining the Ogeechee in Bryan County. It has the dubious distinction of having the largest water snakes in Georgia. It can be accessed at Rocks River Park, just north of Claxton on U.S. 301.

Mrs. Rogers Restaurant, Claxton

I’m not sure when they opened, but this has been a Claxton landmark for at least 50 years. I’ve eaten the buffet here and it’s just good old Southern cooking.

Derrell Lewis writes: “Mrs. Rogers Restaurant opened in 1957 if I’m not mistaken because my Grandmother, Mrs. Sarah Lewis, was the first waitress that JR Rogers hired and I believe she told me that the first day they opened that she and JR Rogers walked in at the same time, at 5:00 in the morning…I think she told me that was in 1957…”

Update: As of 2018, the restaurant is closed.
