Modoc had a post office from 1888-1929. The community name was apparently chosen somewhat randomly, as available sources state it was named for the Modoc Indians, a tribe in the Pacific Northwest. So many railroad stops were popping up around the turn of the last century that when a name was required to satisfy officials at the postal service, they sometimes had no logical connection to their location.
