Victory Tabernacle, Flovilla

Victory Tabernacle takes up pretty much all of the historic center of Flovilla and their adaptive re-use of the commercial block and adjacent storefronts probably saved these places. Storefront churches are often some of the only tenants in the abandoned downtowns I’ve been documenting for years. As with businesses, I don’t endorse churches, but that doesn’t limit me from being glad they’ve kept these old buildings alive.

One of the storefronts is one of my favorites in all of Georgia. A sign on the transom reads “Gospel Singing” and that’s flanked on either side by neon versions of the words Victory Jubilee. It’s a perfect scene. When I was making these photographs, mid-day on a Friday in October 2017, the church was meeting and I could hear gospel music coming from inside, just as the sign promised. It almost felt like a movie, surreal.

England Chapel United Methodist Church, Circa 1888, Butts County

Like so many other rural congregations, England Chapel Methodist began meeting in a brush arbor in 1885 until the construction of a permanent home. The property upon which this church was built was given by D. N. Carmichael in 1887 and a local mill operator, J. B. Settle, offered to prepare the timber for the construction. Members from the surrounding community cut trees on their property and donated it to the church, which they also helped build. It still serves members today.

New Hope Baptist Church, Flovilla

Flovilla, Georgia

Flovilla was established in 1885 and its name means “Villa of Flowers”. Much of its early history is linked to the Flovilla & Indian Springs Railway. The shortline was established in 1888 to transport passengers from Flovilla to the resort in Indian Springs. At the time, it boasted of being the shortest incorporated railroad in the world. Heard Street, running parallel to the railroad tracks, is Flovilla’s historic commercial center. Very little remains, after fires in 1907 and 1923 destroyed numerous stores and offices.

Flovilla United Methodist Church, 1884

Indian Springs Chapel, Circa 1890, Butts County

Said to have been built from timbers left over from the construction of the iconic Wigwam Hotel (later lost to fire), the little Victorian chapel at Indian Springs has been home to a Baptist congregation, as well as serving as a non-denominational place of worship throughout its history. Restoration work has been done in recent years.

Jackson Presbyterian Church

Old First Baptist Church, 1914, Jackson

According to comments, this was once the Jackson First Baptist Church. It was built in 1914 to replace the previous wooden church building which was built in 1890 on the adjacent lot and demolished in 1916. The church is abandoned and for sale. Another comment suggests that after being used by other congregations, it has been abandoned and [as of 2023] is being considered for demolition.

Jackson United Methodist Church, 1924

Tracing its origins to around 1818 and first meeting in a log cabin, Jackson United Methodist Church has served the community for nearly 200 years. The present lot was purchased in 1845 and has been home to three church structures.

A couple of very nice young ladies were running the church pumpkin sale the day I was in town.
