I don’t often document convenience stores, but before a chain dollar store moved into the community, the Fast Track was the de facto shopping center for the Beards Creek community. I think they sold a little bit of everything and had a laundromat.

I made this photograph in 2010 and these chairs, which sat outside the Laundry Room in Glennville, were a bit of a landmark in my travels. Though they’re gone now, they would have been the height of modernity when originally placed here. Modular chairs such as these have become icons of Mid-Century Modern design and similar versions are still sold today. While it may seem strange that businesses as unassuming as laundromats embraced this innovation, their durability and practicality made them quiet sensible for places that received a lot of random traffic.

This Mid-Century Modern/Googie laundromat is a rare form for Fitzgerald and was owned by Ike McElmurray. It was an active business until a few years ago.

At the other end of Main Street is the Houston Coin Laundry and another derelict storefront.

The window paintings are a nice feature.

This is located next door to the Bacon Lodge.

The clean and simple look of this storefront make it one of my favorite in South Georgia.
