This was the farm of longtime Ocilla physician Herman Dismuke. Dr. Dismuke was the health care provider for the nearby Irwinville Farms Project during the Great Depression and a beloved member of the community.

The farm was primarily a large pecan orchard, which is still cultivated today. These barns are all that remain.

This photograph of the farmhouse was made circa 2001. It has been digitally restored to fit this space.
Update: The house was razed in 2010. As of 2025, only one barn may be standing. A tornado passed through the area in December 2019 and did quite a bit of damage.

I understand there were two Dismukes brothers who came to America. One dropped the ‘S’ one kept it. I also understand that Dismukes is on the ‘outside’ walls of the French Huguenut church in Charleston or Columbia, SC.. I would like to know more about this historical site!…….Many thanks, Lucille Dismukes, South Carolina
So you’re probably all related! I have the same thing on my mom’s side of the family with Harrells. There are multitudinous spellings of that name. This was the farmhouse of Dr. Herman Dismuke, who was best known locally as the physican for the Irwinvlle Farms Project, a New Deal resettlement.
