Mitchell County Courthouse, 1936, Camilla

Designed for the WPA under the supervision of William J. J. Chase, the architecture of this courthouse, like the one Chase designed for Cook County, is Stripped Classical. The eagles surrounding the clock add an Art Deco element.

The architect also designed the Troup County Courthouse in LaGrange, which is very similar in design. I grew up in Camilla, and for many years Mr. Crawf Collins, who was an electrician, was the only one with the knowledge and skill to make any repairs or adjustments on the clock; he later passed that responsibility on to his son-in-law. I wonder who keeps it up now.
