Just to add to the comments, I attended Surrency school from 1970, first year of integration, to 1972. Sampson Herndon was the principal. A few of the teachers were, Alfreida Burkett, Barbara Tillman, Carrie McLemore, Emory Corbett, Gussie Burkett, Mrs Eason and more. I’m not sure of it’s closing date though.
I graduated from Surrency High in 1960 and my brother graduated in 1962. Miss Ellen Surrency was our English teacher. She was also our mother’s English Teacher. Great Lady. Thank you for the memories.
Just curious. How did your father and grandfather go to the school at the same time??

Is there any chance you have a picture of your fathers Surrency graduation class? My Dad graduated in 1945 and the one I have of his class has the small pictures of each student on the same page.
This school was built in the mid 20’s and has been closed for over four decades… Fourth District Elementary school which is located in South West Surrency on Blackshear hwy…
This is the old Surrency High School. The Fourth District Elementary School is located on Highway 15/Blackshear Highway south of Baxley. The citizens of Appling County voted to keep the school open and it’s currently an active school.
My father who died in 2001 attended this school. He loved to tell the story about riding his horse through the school as a prank. true or not, I don’t know.
Am doing some research on Surrency. Are you sure that 1963 was the last year there was a high school? Because it is my understanding that the school continued as a grade school for a while after that?
I lived in Surrency when I was a kid. This place was never opened. Fourth District is out of town about 5-10 miles, its been a few years since I lived in GA so my memory is shy. This place was kept well preserved when I lived there and was used for a variety of different things within the community.

Thanks for the information, Annette. I’m glad they decided to keep the Fourth District School open.

This is Surrency High School. I was one of the last graduates. The last year it was used was in 1963. My class of 25 graduated that year.
