Brain, I know you love this old gas station. I drove by there last week and was shocked to see that the gas pumps were GONE. I am sure they are antiques but it really made me sad. The door to the store is broken and stands open.
That is so sad to hear.
That store belonged to Robert Lee Taylor Sr. It was closed because the women from opposing sides of the Taylor family were spatting all the time. He was my Great Grandfather. When I left the Farm there was still about 1000 pounds of Planters cotton dust in the store. It had 10% DDT as it’s active agent. Could not use it for row crop, but we had the most bug free garden in the South East.
I was very sad to see that the gas pumps have been removed. I loved those old gas pumps.
This is Taylor’s Store located on Highway 39 near the Clay/Quitman Co. line. It is owned and was operated by the Taylor family who still farm the adjacent land. The store was closed in the early 1960’s due to not being profitable for the Taylor family.
Thanks, James. I’ll add this information.
Just behind this old service station is a cemetery that can’t be seen from the road. It is the midway church cemetery. This cemetery is in very bad condition, and needs care. Some of the early residents of this area of Clay county, Georgia are buried in this cemetery.
