Colquitt Theatre, Circa 1943, Moultrie

This Art Deco landmark now serves as the senior citizens center. Built by Charlie Powell and remodeled after burning in 1956, it’s one of the most visually appealing theatres in South Georgia.

I was in the audience when it caught fire in the middle of a film in 1956.

Firetrucks from all the surrounding cities came as they were afraid the whole town would burn down. The projectionist was rescued from the roof of the front facade.

The picture starred a red-head actress whose name I do not recall. She was standing in front of a fireplace when I noticed that the fire in the fireplace was going over the mantle and then I realized the screen was on fire. Two Air Force cadets who were in the theater stood up and shouted “Do not run, but walk to the nearest exit!” By this time, the entire screen was ablaze.

I was 18 at the time.
