Bleckley County Courthouse, 1914, Cochran

Celebrating its centennial this year, the Bleckley County Courthouse was designed by the firm of Sayre & Baldwin. Historic markers on the front lawn memorialize well-known local citizens, including this one, dedicated to Sergeant John F. Conner, Sr., a policeman killed in the line of duty.

In his youth, my father, L.V. McGough, attended a school in Cochran. I believe it was Georgia Military College. I have a football badge that has GMC in big letters in red & black with a tag attached of a bulldog. When we were visiting my maternal grandmother in Hawkinsville he took me over to Cochran to see the place. I can’t remember if we found it. Thanks for all the pics.

Georgia Military College is in Milledgeville and I do think their colors are red and black. Middle Georgia College – I think used to be Ebeneezer College in its beginnings- and now called Middle Georgia College and State University is in Cochran. My grandfather is honored with a plaque on the front lawn there also. He was Col. Lucian Whipple a long-time citizen lawyer of Cochran.
