Twin City, Georgia

This was the commercial center of what was once known as Summit. It merged in 1920 with the adjacent town of Graymont to become Twin City.

Mrs. Pauline Newton had a beauty shop in the old Summit Bank building in the 1960s. Mr. Charlie Bishop had a grocery store in the far left building in the 1950s. My Grandfather had a grocery store in the building next to the bank and my Grandmother had a cafe in the rear of the store. L. W. ( Fate ) Grimes and Lola Belle Grimes, 1940s. I was living in the living quarters over the bank when Mr. Albert Parhams grocery store burned in the early 1950s. In the 1940 – 1960 s their were 7 grocery stores in Summit. Charlie Bishops, Fate Grimes, Ed Womacks, Buck and Roscoe Browns, B.L Browns, Albert Parhams, and Hall and Hendersons. Note the old Lews Bar-B-Q building was the original Marlow Daniels Chevrolet dealership building. I worked for Ed Womack in 1959 to 1964s for $ 8 a week end. ( Friday afternoon after school and 7:30 till 11 pm on Saturday. A soda or single dip of ice cream was 6 cents then. Mr. James Neal, former POW, owned a service station across the street from the Summit bank. Mr. Sego had a barber shop next to Brown Brothers store and he cut my hair for 50 cents in the 1950s.

I had a tour of those buildings years  ago. The sweet lady who owned the ” store ” talked  about the history of the town. Told me about the bank and other interesting details. Her husband had passed away and I imagine she has too by now. It was at least 20 years ago.
