Southern Railway Depot, McRae

This may have been built in the 1890s but I can’t find an exact date. It’s been used for storage in recent years, I believe, but appears to be in deteriorating condition. It would be a great restoration project for McRae.

Alexander Bain McRae built the station. He was a very early pioneer to the area. He wanted to settle on the Ocmulgee near Jacksonville, Ga. Most of the good land was already taken so he moved north. The railroad from Brunswick to Macon, was started before the war of 1861-1865. After the war was over, its construction resumed. Seeing an opportunity Alexander built the station. Exact date I do not know. He also donated land for the development of McRae. He is buried at his remote family cemetery, near his old homestead, on the Scotland /Town’s Road. We had a gathering at the cemetery last year to celebrate his life.

Love seeing old depots. My father was the agent for many years in Hawkinsville, Ga. One of his good friends was the agent in McRae.
