Horton’s, across from the Georgia Theatre, has been a downtown Athens institution since W. P. “Doc” Horton, Sr., purchased it from the Reid brothers in 1947, but there has been a corner drugstore at this location since the early 1910s. And in case you were wondering, the neon sign still works.

My Uncle Jim Horton (pharmacist)and my Aunt Lorene Horton ran the drug store for years at 5 points on Lumpkin and Milledge Ave. His brother ran the other one near the stadium. My dad had a beer and wine business at 5 points called “Go Dawgs Package” in the 1980’s and when I was much younger I would walk to the drug store soda fountain and come back with two ice creams for my dad and myself. Good times 🙂
