Fred’s Place has been described as a “juke joint” and center of social activity in Johnson Hummock, owned by Fred Johnson (1913-2008) and Flora Hillery Johnson (1918-1976). Fred was a beloved ferry boat captain and a storehouse of knowledge on the history of Sapelo Island. The structure dates to circa 1900, but the usage as a juke joint would have been a good bit later, I believe.
