Mars Hill School, 1873, Cobb County

Though it has been absorbed by Acworth today, Mars Hill was once a rural community in Cobb County, centered around a Presbyterian church, cemetery, and this schoolhouse. The schoolhouse was deeded to Cobb County in 1902 and remained in use until 1938. Today, it is used by the Mars Hill Memorial Association, the group charged with overseeing the adjacent cemetery.

I lived in Cobb County for fifty years and often saw this old schoolhouse on Mars Hill Church Road. I marveled at its simplicity and beauty. Sometimes I stopped and looked through the windows just to see the inside. We also had a one room schoolhouse further in West Cobb on County Line Road, but an arsonist burned the lovely historic Allatoona School into ashes sometime, I think, in the 1980s. Today all that remains is the historical marker giving details of its existence. Jesse M. Bookhardt
