Precinct House, Sibbie

Sibbie is a nearly forgotten ghost town on the Wilcox-Ben Hill County line. While some of the community is in Ben Hill County, the precinct house is in Wilcox County.

Sibbie Wilcox Reid (1836-1872)

Sibbie Wilcox Reid (1836-1872), was the daughter of Capt. Thomas Lea Willcox (1812-1897) and Abigail McDuffie Willcox (1816-1864). Capt. Willcox’s father, John Willcox II (1777-1852), a native of Pennsylvania, brought the family to Georgia and settled near present-day Rhine. John Willcox I (1728-1793) was active in the Regulator Movement in North Carolina in the years before the American Revolution.

Sibbie was married to Drewry Reid (1831-1872), a Confederate veteran who served as 1st Sergeant in Co. E, 49th Georgia Infantry, was wounded at 2nd Manassas, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville, and was discharged for his injuries.

Sibbie was also the namesake of the nearby Sibbie community. After some had suggested it was another woman by the name of Sibbie, Ken Fuller, her great-great-grandson, confirmed that Sibbie Wilcox Reid was indeed the namesake.
