Captain Mike’s Dolphin Tours, Tybee Island

Lazaretto Creek is located on the edge of Tybee Island and can be accessed at the Lazaretto Creek Fishing Pier off U. S. Highway 80 or just over the Lazaretto Creek Bridge. It’s a great area for tourists and locals alike to stop and take in the salt marsh scenery. Georgia’s endangered shrimping industry is usually represented with a few boats and Captain Mike’s bright yellow Dolphin boats (since 1992) herald a boom in ecotourism. It’s really a nice contrast between old and new.

Fort Screven Guard House, 1905, Tybee Island

Built by the U. S. Army, the Fort Screven Guard House served the military in various functions until being decommissioned in the 1940s. It briefly served as the Tybee Jail, in the 1950’s and 1960’s and became the Tybee Island Community Center in the 1970’s. Inappropriate modifications were made during these decades. Recent restoration work has undone much of this and the guard house is once again a first class landmark, among the oldest public buildings on Tybee Island.
