This house was built as a private residence but soon became a “day hotel” for businessmen working downtown. It’s used as a real estate office today.

This unusual Neoclassical Revival house features high-pitched dormers, reminiscent of the Gothic Revival; it’s one of the most recognizable houses in Winder and is home to the Magnolia Place restaurant today.

Old Barrow County Jail, 1915, Winder
The old Barrow County Jail has served as the Barrow County Museum since 1993. The “citadel sytle” was a common form for Georgia jails in the early 20th century.

Barrow County Courthouse, 1920, Winder
J. J. Baldwin designed the Barrow County Courthouse in the most typical fashion for Georgia courthouses of the era: Neoclassical with a clock tower. While the county has long since outgrown the facility, it is still home to multiple government offices.

Seaboard Air Line Depot, 1912, Winder
In the 1890s John H. Winder, an engineer and manager with the Seaboard Air Line Railroad, was instrumental in bringing the line through the hamlet of Jug Tavern. The residents were so grateful they renamed the settlement Winder in his honor. Soon, the area experienced rapid growth and the new town became an important stop between Athens and Atlanta. This depot was erected in 1912, to reflect the newfound prosperity of the city. It remains a well-loved landmark today.
