First National Bank Building, 1889, Cordele

Located at the corner of 7th Street and 11th Avenue, just a few steps from the pool room, is the oldest surviving brick commercial building in Cordele. Originally a bank, it’s best known today as the former home of Gainey’s Drug Store.

In the 60’s the hometown drugstore was still a vibrant business. In Cordele the stores were Gainey’s, Hill’s Rexall, Jones’, Ryals’, and Adams’. There may have been more, but I remember all of those. At least the first three had lunch counters. The ice cream was best at Jones’ and the sandwiches at Hill’s were pretty good. You’ll never get a grilled cheese at CVS.
