Blalock House, 1895, Waycross

This house is one of the nicer examples of the Neoclassical Revival in Waycross. Since this is a relatively early date for the style, I’m wondering if the portico and porches aren’t later additions. Perhaps someone in Waycross will know more. I believe it was empty for a few years but it definitely looks like it’s being cared for today. I was told that the cast iron fence was original to the property and that the owner once owned a house on the adjoining lot, a Victorian that was lost to fire.

This house now belongs to a famous Event/Floral Designer out of Atlanta Ga who gave the house an amazing uplift with his touch of decor. His family lives in this house and are very popular for southern style cooking, business, and decor. This family is so kind and known all over the city. They are the standard of humble southern living. Love this family.

They usually have classy, impressive Christmas decorations, however there were none on display this past Christmas. I hope the family is okay.

My grandmother grew up in Waycross and to her this was the most elegant & luxurious place imaginable. He father (A.J. Wilson) did a few handyman jobs for Mr. Blaylock and she had been in the house once. There was an enclosed sun porch (they called it the Florida room) that Mrs. Blalock used as a greenhouse. My grandmother was so impressed, she had my grandad recreate it in her own home many years later. I’m so glad it’s being cared for.

Love the iron fence, the big oak and very used looking sidewalk. This is a beautiful house, well proportioned.

I immediately thought of the Mercer House in Savannah when I saw this picture! Different color but the style is similar.

Brian, who would think that a grandiose house like this would be I Waycross. I never saw this house on my trips to and in passing through Waycross in the way to Ocilla. I’m impressed, it’s beautiful and glad it’s preserved. Jim
