Osprey Mill, 1916, Porterdale

The Osprey Mill was built on the north side of the Yellow River, west of downtown Porterdale. It was the second mill build in the modern era and with a large complex of supporting structures, was the largest mill in town. I believe it was the last of the three, still in operation, and while originally similar in appearance to the Porterdale and Welaunee Mills, was modernized at some point to accommodate changing work requirements.

Paul, I noticed those Art Deco features, as well. I believe they may have been added a bit later, but that’s just a guess. 1916 would have been too early, I think.

Porterdale has some incredible buildings and homes preserved from the cotton mill era. Thank you very much for the comprehensive review.

Is Carrollton GA on your schedule? Mandeville Mills and Printed Fabrics buildings are still in place. Also Tanner Groceries and the small next-to-the-road homes for Mandeville and Southwire employees.
