Built by Sam Hinds, this house features very unique windows. They were intended for use in an Episcopal church that was destroyed by a hurricane before they could be installed. The portico is leaning a bit, but the house and grounds are beautifully maintained.

Along with this innovative cross-gable gambrel-roofed house, lumberman Charles H. Caldwell built this carriage house, later used as a garage. It was among the most modern properties in Bainbridge at the time of its construction. The present owners have recently repainted the home.

M. V. Woodhull of Monroe, New York, built this as a winter home. Originally a Queen Anne, it was extensively remodeled in the 1940s to its present Colonial appearance.
Jan Godwin writes: I remember [this] as the home of “old” Dr. L.W. Willis, Sr., and his wife, Eugenia “Genie.” It was where they raised their two children, Mary Eugenia Willis Rollins and Dr. L.W. Willis (Bo), Jr., who were both born in the 1920’s. Old Dr. Willis practiced family medicine in Bainbridge for over 50 years until his death in 1972, at a time when only a few doctors were in Bainbridge. The two Willis doctors probably delivered over 75% of the babies born in Decatur County from the 1920’s to about 1980. The house was inherited by Dr. Willis’ daughter, Mary Eugenia Rollins, and his granddaughter…lives there now.

One of the grandest homes in Bainbridge, this property was built by Sheriff Leroy Patterson from bricks in his own brickyard.
Though in need of cosmetic repairs, the house appears to be in good shape overall. It’s a real Southern beauty.

One of several churches in Bainbridge’s residential historic district, St. John’s is a personal favorite. It’s the oldest church building in continuous use in Decatur County.

Whether you’re a gospel fan or country music is your preference, you’ll find a perfect combination of those two styles with The Parish Family’s newest CD, Old House. (I was honored that they used one of my photographs on the cover). Longtime country and gospel fans familiar with the band Shenandoah will enjoy Marty Raybon’s guest spot. The Parish Family is based in Bainbridge and consists of brothers Ronnie & Mark, and Ronnie’s wife, Kesha Parish. All three members are accomplished songwriters and perform largely from their own catalog. They’ve had number one hits and continue to receive numerous awards, but when you listen to their work, you’ll know that they’re not in it for that. There’s no doubting that they love what they do. To me, it’s like hearing the old-time gospel I remember from my childhood with a slightly modern twist.
