Orien T. Gower House, 1920, Cordele

This was built for Orien Thomas Gower, Sr. (1879-1960), who served as judge of the Crisp Judicial Circuit for over sixteen years. I’m grateful to Cindie Craig for allowing me to photograph the wonderful trompe l’oeil ceiling in the dining room. Cindie and her husband Marvin are in the process of restoring the house.

The trompe l’oeil is painted on plaster and though it needs some slight cleaning and a cosmetic touch-up, it’s in amazing condition for its age.

O. M. Heard House, Cordele

This is a nearly identical twin to the J. W. Cannon House.

Briggs Arrington writes: Oscar M. Heard was my grandfather, W.P. Heard’s brother. They had a wholesale grocery business in Cordele before the Depression. W.P. Heard built a large house on 12th Avenue, I think around 1917.

Lydia Adkins: This house was built by the Heards and is called the Heard House. Renay and Lydia Adkins own it and it is the home of Adkins Studio of Photography. It was in pretty bad shape when we bought it. But it has had a great deal of work done on it.

Eclectic House, Cordele

From the curb, this has the appearance of an American Foursquare with Classical details, but the sides feature Queen Anne-style bay windows on both floors.

Streamline Moderne House, Cordele

Though not Streamline Moderne (or Art Moderne) in the purest sense, this house, whether built this way or modified to this appearance, exhibits strong elements of the style. It’s quite rare in residential examples, especially rural ones.
