Burns House, 1913, Jesup

Laurel Gibson writes: Spent many nights here, this was my aunt,Martha Jean my uncle Harry and my two cousins Richard and Michael Burns home. After the death of my uncle and aunt 5 and 10 years ago. The remaining son Richard has it on the market now. So much fun here. My brother and I played for hours on the swing on the front porch, we would also run down the block to see the train go by. And the food, oh my goodness could my aunt cook. I wish I could buy this, my favorite home in the whole world

Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Depot, 1903, Jesup

Nearly lost to fire in 2003, the old Atlantic Coast Line depot in Jesup was restored in 2012-2013. It now serves as one of five Amtrak passenger stations in Georgia; it’s also home to the welcome center.

Gene’s, Jesup

Gene’s was a generator and starter service shop.

Shotgun House, Jesup

This house and its identical neighbor are later and slightly larger examples of the shotgun style, but just as utilitarian and unadorned than their antecedents.

Brannen’s Grocery, Jesup

This neighborhood grocery likely had several owners over the years. James V. Brannen writes: “My parents, Prentice and Nola Brannen ran this store in the early 50’s when I was still in diapers and drinking from a bottle. Mother kept me in a crib to keep me out of everything.”

Quality Signs, Jesup

As part of a renovation project on commercial storefronts in downtown Jesup, this sign painter’s storefront has been exposed. The typography would suggest the business likely dated to the 1950s or maybe the 1960s, but not the building itself. It’s likely much older. I just like the old sign and the design era it represents.

BJ’s Bar-B-Que, Jesup

As with most good barbeque spots, BJ’s Original Hog Wild Bar-B-Que in Jesup is a bit ragged around the edges, but don’t let the looks fool you.

For nearly 30 years, BJ’s has been doing barbeque right in Jesup. Pulled (they call it chopped) pork with a tangy mustard sauce is the highlight of their menu for me. I personally hate sweet sauce on meat. Their baked beans, which I recommend, are a bit sweet but full of pieces of pork. Brisket, chicken, and Brunswick stew are also available. The only thing I don’t care for here is the slaw, which is just too sweet. But the pork is so tender and the sauce so good, the slaw isn’t that big of a deal for me.
