Greek Revival Cottage, 1850s, Oglethorpe

Though I can’t confirm it at this time, I believe this home to be of antebellum construction.

I haven’t been able to locate an exact date for this house but was told it was built in the 1850s. It’s one of the most important antebellum structures in Macon County. Comments on our Facebook page suggest it is also known as the Elmore House, and was home for many years to Pearl Hardin and Mary Belle Powers. I hope to learn more.

This vernacular Greek Revival is one of Oglethorpe’s best-documented and impressive homes.

Macon County’s courthouse is a beautiful structure, but its architect and builder are both unknown. I believe it was recently renovated.
