Police Precinct, Glenwood

I’m calling this a police precinct because I’ve seen several like it around Georgia, but it appears the police station is now located in the city hall. Still, this is one of the better maintained examples I’ve seen. The Uvalda Police Department, just down the road, utilizes a similar structure (I believe it’s still in use).

Red & White Grocery, Glenwood

I first photographed this store nearly six years ago. It looks to be the busiest place in Glenwood and hasn’t changed a bit. Rodney Porter writes: I remember when it was Atchisons – in the mid 70’s.

Nimrod Clark House, Wheeler County

This may be two houses joined together but more interestingly, the posts on the porch are made from trees. I wasn’t able to get a more detailed photograph. There are several great outbuildings on this property, including the barn seen below. Helen Jones identifies this as the Nimrod Clark house and notes that Mr. Clark was born in 1815. This would suggest an antebellum origin for the house, which is likely log underneath updated siding.

Sumner Farmhouse, Wheeler County

Helen Jones writes: This is my grandmother’s house. The room in the back is the dining room. There used to be a side porch in the middle connecting the dining room to the front hall way. My Grandmother had it closed in to become a bathroom & Flordi room as she called it. A Florida room. This was done about the mid 60’s. The kitchen is on the other side of house. House & land still in family. Built before 1909.

Hope Baptist Church, Wheeler County

This congregation was established in 1947.

Paul Farmhouse, Wheeler County

This style of house, sometimes known as a “Double Shotgun”, was once much more common in South Georgia than it is today. Thanks to Maci Paul for the identification.

Board-and-Batten Farmhouse, Wheeler County

As I’ve discussed before, “Cracker” is more a state of mind than a particular style, but because this style was so common among South Georgia’s pioneer settlers, it’s often associated with the Crackers.

Keene Farmhouse, Wheeler County

Thanks to Brandon Keene for the identification. This was his family’s old homeplace.
