Central of Georgia Railway Depot, 1890, Chickamauga

After having fallen into disrepair for many years, including the loss of its tower, this depot was recently restored and is now home to the Walker County Regional Heritage and Train Museum.

Southern Railway Depot, McRae

This may have been built in the 1890s but I can’t find an exact date. It’s been used for storage in recent years, I believe, but appears to be in deteriorating condition. It would be a great restoration project for McRae.

Grovania, Georgia

Besides Ellis Grocery, the old Georgia Southern & Florida Railroad freight depot is the last public landmark in Grovania. The graffiti on the passing train car seems to sum up how often you might encounter a scene like this today.

Seaboard Air Line Freight Depot, Helena

Helena’s restored Seaboard freight depot is presently home to the Telfair Museum of History.

Atlantic Coast Line Depot, 1917, Blackshear

Built to replace the Savannah, Florida & Western depot which burned in 1917, this structure was used by the Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Coast Line for passenger and freight service and handled freight as late as the 1970s. It now houses the Pierce County Heritage Museum.

Blue Ridge Scenic Railway

This tourist railway normally runs a between Blue Ridge, McCaysville, Georgia-Copperhill, Tennessee, following the Toccoa River for much of he route. I’ve not taken a trip with them but have heard great things about the pace, the views, and the vintage cars [you can choose from air-conditioned or open-air]. Keep the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway in mind if you’re traveling to the mountains.

Louisville & Nashville Railroad Depot, 1905, Blue Ridge

The beautifully restored Louisville & Nashville depot is an anchor of downtown redevelopment in Blue Ridge, and is now the jumping off point for the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway.

National Register of Historic Places

Macon, Dublin & Savannah Railroad Depot, Circa 1902, Tarrytown

The date I have given for the depot is an assumption based on the fact that the Macon, Dublin & Savannah didn’t complete their Vidalia segment until 1901-02. The diminutive size of this structure would suggest it was more likely used for freight than passengers. Mr. & Mrs. Arthur White were responsible for restoring the depot, in 2011.

Seaboard Air Line Railway Depot, 1904, Ailey

This historic depot was renovated in 1999 for use as City Hall.

Atlanta & Florida Railroad Depot, 1888, Meansville

Railroad service was discontinued in Meansville in 1977. Today, this restored Victorian depot serves as Meansville City Hall.
