The corner store was originally The Bank Of Siloam, the vault is still inside. My cousins, Lawson and Ulma O’Neil McKinley owned it as a grocery/general store last. My grandparents lived in this town of Siloam, so I grew up around there and visit yearly – I also love to take photographs of areas before they are lost.
I went to elementary school in Siloam. My uncle, Jimmy Copeland (Uncle Jim) drove the school bus for my route. We always stopped at the corner of Miss Ulma’s store to let the high school students out so they could catch the bus to Greensboro before going on to the elementary school. Uncle Jim drove all eight of us children to school. And yes, there used to be two more stores along there. Dr. Johnson, the druggist, wife was our Elementary school principle
If I’m not mistaken, my grandfather had a barbershop in the left store front of the building. It was Lacey’s Barbershop. I think it was back in the 40’s. In later years he had the shop at the road in front of his and my grandmother’s house.
