Though the official list of Georgia Carnegie libraries list its date of construction as 1913, I think that was just when the funding process was initiated. It was completed in 1914 at a cost of $10,000. It served the community as a library until 1999 and after undergoing a renovation in the late 1990s it became the headquarters of the Terrell County Historic Preservation Society.
Dawson Historic District, National Register of Historic Places
Drew Monroe Dismuke operated a general store here. Jennifer Horne McKinney sheds some light on the history of the settlement: ” It was Iverson Lea Graves who sold the right of way through that plantation to the Southwestern Railroad (later Central of Georgia) and the area and resulting town was called “Graves.” Iverson Dutton Graves continued to live in the home he built in Terrell County until his death in 1906.” Jennifer notes that she is a distant relative of Iverson Lea Graves, who was one of the founders of Emory University.
It’s a well-loved landmark on US 82, between Dawson and Shellman.
Now home to Dawson City Hall, the Baldwin Block originally housed a hardware store, furniture store, and barber shop. The building originally featured chimney-like square towers along the perimeter roofline, anchored by an ornamental cylindrical tower at the corner.
Dawson Historic District, National Register of Historic Places
Built in 1892 by William H. Parkins, the Terrell County Courthouse is considered a significant example of High Victorian public architecture in Georgia. It’s also one of the tallest rural courthouses in Georgia. Parkins was the most important practicing architect in Georgia from just after the Civil War until his retirement in the late 1880s.
