Watson House, Surrency

I wondered if this could be the old Allen Surrency house, so famous for a series of hauntings in the 1870s, but George Eason and Bruce Carson both wrote to say that that house was across the street and burned many years ago. George’s aunt, Maggie Watson, lived here and he recalls visiting her in this house until the early 1960s.

 

Tip’s Hot Dog Stand & Barber Shop, Surrency

Karen Igou Holcomb remembers: Best hotdogs in the world. He used to deliver also. If he had enough orders he would drive the 10 miles to Baxley to deliver for lunch. He was a very nice man and his mother was the sweetest.

United Methodist Church, Surrency

Organized by Maggie Overstreet, the Methodist congregation at Surrency dates to 1903. A log cabin was used for services until the present church was constructed.

Surrency High School, 1920s, Appling County

This was the Surrency High School until closing in 1963. It it still maintained for special events in the community.

 

General Store, Surrency

According to the last owner, this was an old store, removed from the lot across the street in an effort to save it. As of late May 2014, it was razed.
