Southern Railway Depot, 1904, Royston

The Elberton Air-Line Railroad first built a line through Royston in the late 1870s. After a series of mergers the line became property of the Southern Railway, who built this depot in 1904. The city now owns and rents the depot for public use.

Ritz Theatre, 1899, Brunswick

Originally home to the offices of the Brunswick & Birmingham Railroad and the Grand Opera House, the historic Ritz Theatre is a preservation success story. Thanks to the efforts of Heather Heath and the Golden Isles Arts & Humanities Association and the Fox Theatre Institute, the Ritz has returned to its rightful place as a cultural anchor for downtown Brunswick.

Dorchester Depot, Liberty County

I assumed this was a schoolhouse, as it’s located on Old Seabrook School Road, but apparently, it was the old Dorchester Depot.

Historic Seabrook Village writes: This…is the Dorchester Train Depot that once stood at the railroad tracks in Midway. It was first moved to Martin Road in Midway where it was a laundromat and daycare center. It was later acquired by the Seabrook Village Foundation and moved to Old Seabrook School Road in Seabrook. It was stabilized but not restored. After being awarded grant money through the ISTEA program, the foundation was arbitrarily cut out of the grant by the Liberty County Development Authority in September 2001.

Georgia Railroad Depot, Circa 1881, Sparta

The Georgia Railroad depot at Sparta has been in derelict condition for many years, but the roof has recently been replaced and I believe further renovations are on the drawing board.

It is very similar to other depots of the Georgia Railroad.

Seaboard Air Line Depot, Rochelle

The Victorian depot in Rochelle was likely built in the early 1900s. It has been in bad condition for many years and should be rehabilitated.

Railroad Mural, Fitzgerald

Railroads were integral to the settlement of Fitzgerald in the late 1890s and for much of its history have been one of its main economic components. The city commissioned Dylan Ross to create this colorful mural. You may recall Dylan as the artist behind the brilliant Andy Griffith Show mural in Broxton.

Central of Georgia Railway Passenger Depot, 1899, Forsyth

Designed by the prominent architectural firm of Bruce & Morgan, the old passenger depot at Forsyth is now home to a museum.

Central of Georgia Railway Depot, Perkins

This is a rear/side view of the depot. It has one of the most unusual configurations I’ve seen and may have been modified in some way over time. I am unsure as to the date it was constructed.
