Hendrix Farmhouse, Candler County

A classic two-story white house with a gray roof, featuring a front porch supported by columns and red shutters on the windows.

I believe this was built as a Plantation Plain and was later modified to its present appearance. It’s a beautiful old home and is the centerpiece of the Hendrix Farm, whose produce and Vidalia Onions are well-loved in the area.

I made these photographs at last year’s (2011) 35th Annual Glennville Sweet Onion Festival. Tattnall County grows more Vidalia Sweet Onions than any other county, accounting for nearly half of the state’s crop every year.

Vidalia Onions, Tattnall County

February 2011

In February, Vidalia Onion plants are sprouting all over Tattnall County.

May 2011

By May, it’s harvest time and millions of onions lie waiting in the fields.

Bland Farms, Tattnall County

Directly across the highway from the offices of Bland Farms you’re likely to see these crates stacked 15-20 feet high; they look like two big buildings from a distance.

Bland Farms is the country’s largest grower, packer and shipper of sweet onions, accounting for nearly half of all Vidalia onions sold.
