Andy Griffith Show Mural, Broxton

Some of you may remember this old farmhouse on the outskirts of Broxton that I photographed a few years ago. It originally featured a mural done by owner Linda Christian. She really enjoyed doing it and was happy that it brought lots of joy to passersby on US441. It’s presently being spruced up, with a new face, by Dylan Ross. Dylan is a native of Coffee County whose extraordinary talent has garnered him scores of impressive clients and fans ranging from Aaron Murray and Luke Bryan to Lennox Lewis and Dennis Rodman. His work is really fresh and colorful and he’s a working artist in the sense that he’s always creating art.

Newbern House, Broxton

Thanks to my friend Jim Cottingham for bringing this house to my attention. He writes: Daniel and Saphronia Fussell Newbern raised their children here, one of whom was Grandmother Eula Newbern Cottingham (1885-1974).

The house is dated circa 1900 by the tax assessor, but it may have been built a bit earlier. The I-House, or Plantation Plain, was one of Georgia’s earliest and most popular house types. It’s possible that the 1900 date refers to an improvement, such as the rear shed room.

Hall and Parlor Tenant House, Broxton

Update: As of 2021, this house is no longer standing.

Granitoid Storefront, Broxton

The building is a relic of the early 20th century, but even more, the sign for Broxton Video is a reminder of a time from the late 1980s to early 2000s when even small towns had at least one video rental business. The sculpted stone veneer, sometimes known as Granitoid, was very likely made in nearby Fitzgerald, and the posts look like examples I’ve seen from the Fitzgerald Iron Works.

Commercial Block, Broxton

This multi-use commercial block housed the post office for many years, as well as a barber shop and other businesses.

Farmhouse Mural, Broxton

I met Linda Christian, the owner of this old house and the artist who gave it so much color (in the early 1990s), when I was photographing the location circa 2009. Linda was a delightful person who just wanted to bring joy to others with her work. As of 2015, it has been replaced with a new work by Douglas artist Dylan Ross.

Broxton United Methodist Church

Established in 1870 as Pine Grove, Broxton United Methodist Church has had several names and several locations since its founding. In 1886 the name was changed to Monroe Chapel. I believe the name was changed to Broxton when it moved to this location in 1906. The present church was dedicated in 1965.
