Stillmore United Methodist Church, 1907, Emanuel County
This congregation dates to 1892. Minister-Architect Charles Edward Choate’s beautiful design for this church embodies his relationship with this congregation, of which he was the first minister. Choate would later leave the ministry to become a full-time architect, well-known throughout the South. I photographed this last year, when the leaves were still on the sycamore. I think I like this view better, as more of the church is visible.

Commercial Block, Stillmore
The left side of this block was once the Stillmore Post Office. I imagine the other side was a grocery store.
Turner Service Station, Stillmore
Johnson’s General Store, Stillmore
Dee Bird Bivens writes: When I was a child in Stillmore, this was Mr. Henry Johnson’s General Store where you could buy everything from penny candy to overalls. Although it looks like several different stores now, it was one big store that took up the entire building.
Chicken Sculpture, Stillmore
Marietta may have the iconic “Big Chicken”, but Stillmore has this artsy tribute to the poultry industry, which is the largest employer in the community.
Stillmore School
In 1969 this became the home of David Emanuel Academy. It was destroyed by fire on 14 August 2010, just a few months after I photographed it.
