Single-Pen Office Building, Danielsville

Located on the courthouse square, this appears to be of 19th-century (possibly antebellum) construction and likely served as a lawyer’s office or government office. It’s presently used as an office for the Broad River Watershed Association.

Gholston Stand, Madison County

This little red store is quite a landmark in Madison County and I was determined to photograph it. I came to know of it through the photographs of my friend, Dagmar Nelson. She’s shot it many times over the years and if you’re interested in Madison County, you’ll enjoy here images.

Farmhouse, Gholston Stand Crossroads

Though the house has been stabilized, I believe this landmark of the crossroads to be in its original location. Deb Comer’s comment seems to confirm: My grandparents lived in Comer on a farm and we used to go to Gholston Stand on hot summer days to get Cokes or ice creams. There were two elderly farmers who lived in that house who used to sit on the porch in rocking chairs and wave to everyone who drove by. I always found it very sweet, but somehow sad too.

North Avenue Storefronts, Comer

I talked with a business owner here who remembered when Comer was a much busier place. He was also very concerned about a bypass that will soon carry traffic away from the dwindling downtown area.

He noted that with the coming of the bypass, few people besides locals would have any reason to come here and do business. I hope, however, that the well-preserved storefronts on North Avenue might serve as a catalyst to attract visitors. The two storefronts most recently known as Fields Auto Parts were built circa 1917.

Cast Iron Commercial Block, 1902, Comer

This Neoclassical Revival facade, of brick and cast iron, is quite elaborate for a town the size of Comer, and it has been beautifully restored.

South Fork of the Broad River, Madison County

This magnificent river is one of Georgia’s wildest and among the last free-flowing waterways in the state. This shot was made just below the Watson Mill Bridge, where it’s easily accessed.
