R. B. Kelly Store & Cotton Gin, Chauncey

In August 2024, Yolanda Smith wrote: “A couple of years ago we had a family reunion and took pictures in front of Kelly store. We as kids would go and visit my Grandma Clara Ivey every summer. I wish a western picture could be made there.

Note: This replaces a post originally published on 29 January 2010.

Alamo, Georgia

This view was made from the corner of Commerce and Railroad Streets.

The hardware store in the foreground is a nice contrast to the old agricultural warehouses and water towers. Dot H. Brown writes that her father, J. F. Hattaway and his business partner Cecil Carroll built and operated the cotton gin and warehouses until about 1970.

Main Street Storefronts, Montrose

Dr. Thomas Green writes: The row of storefronts…did house a small general store during my childhood, run by a Mr. Y. H. Thompson, complete with wood-burning stove. The two-story building was the Masonic Hall, also now defunct. The small block structure was/is the voting building. Only time it was opened all year, as far as I recall. Mr. Payne had a auto repair shop in one of the other buildings (previously a store, I think).

Old Post Office & Water Tower, Morven

Smithville, Georgia

Smithville was incorporated in 1863, and a post office established in 1871. According to Ken Krakow’s Georgia Place Names, it was named for a family of Smiths who moved to the area from Atlanta. It was originally known as Renwick.

A few landmark structures survive in this small community, including the block seen above, which has been nicely restored. The block pictured below appears to be largely abandoned.

Jacksonville, Georgia

Land lot 340 in land district 8 was settled circa 1814 and established as the first seat of Telfair County. It was presumably chosen for its proximity to the Ocmulgee River and its then-central location in the county. On 25 November 1815 it was named officially named Jacksonville by the Georgia General Assembly for Andrew Jackson, the hero of the Battle of New Orleans and future President. Though other cities, like Jacksonville, Florida, claim to be the first place named for Andrew Jackson, I believe little Jacksonville, Georgia, may hold that distinction. In 1854, with the creation of Coffee County, it was no longer centrally located. A referendum to relocate the courthouse was held in 1856 but the results are unknown. In 1871, McRae became the county seat.

Donalsonville Grain & Elevator Company

When I first photographed this site, there were three silos. I believe one was lost in October 2018, as Hurricane Michael barrelled through Donalsonville.
