Seaboard Air Line Depot, 1912, Statham

Statham began as a crossroads with a country store and post office, owned by M. J. C. Statham, but experienced growth, and incorporation, when the railroad came to town in 1892. The first depot was built around 1900 and was replaced with this structure in 1912. Though use of the depot was discontinued decades ago, it has been home to various businesses over the years.

Houses of this type were once abundant in the area but have become less common with population growth and development.

Gabled-Ell Farmhouse, Barrow County

This is a common form, but I don’t often encounter these types of houses with board-and-batten siding.

Rockwell Universalist Church, 1881, Barrow County

Rockwell Universalist Church was established in 1839 as the First Universalist Church of Jackson County, in what was then known as the Mulberry Community in Jackson County (present-day Barrow). They never boasted a large membership and nearly disbanded during the Civil War but reorganization in 1867 firmly established the congregation, which survives to this day. When the present structure was built in 1881 the congregation renamed itself Mulberry Church. In the 1920s, a final name change was made, honoring the Rockwell School & Masonic Hall (located across the road and no longer extant) which had served as home to the congregation during the 19th century.

This multi-use commercial building may be Winder’s most recognizable and has recently been restored. It may be best remembered as the home of the Peoples Bank but has also been home to a theatre and other businesses over the years.

Benson’s Bread Mural, Circa 1920, Winder

Demolition of several storefronts on Broad Street uncovered this historic mural around 2018. A ghost sign for Tanner Hardware is located above the mural, which reads: Benson’s Bread Is Good Bread. Benson’s Bakery was founded in nearby Athens in 1918 by Howard Benson, who quickly gained a reputation for excellent products and became the leading commercial baker in the area. He delivered to Winder and other communities outside Athens and his business grew rapidly. Restoration of the mural is a current project of the Barrow Preservation Society.

Folk Victorian House, Circa 1885, Winder

This house is quite large, leading me to believe it may have been a boarding house. I hope to learn more about its history.
