Central of Georgia Railway Depot, 1869, Bartow

This landmark, built to replace the previous depot (known as Station No. 11) burned by Sherman’s forces on their march to the sea, has been restored and is now home to the Bartow Museum.  Among lots of local history you’ll learn about famous people from this little town, including Roy Evans, inventor of the general purpose (g.p.) vehicle. It’s better known today as the jeep. To schedule a tour, call Peggy Jordan at (478) 364-4030.

Church Street Storefronts, Bartow

This is one of the most beautifully maintained commercial “blocks” I’ve seen in a long time. It’s located just across from the historic 1859 Central of Georgia Depot. Jefferson County or the appropriate local folks really should try to get the entire town of Bartow placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Pepsi Mural, Bartow

As the home of Coca-Cola, Georgia isn’t overrun with Pepsi murals. This is a particularly nice one, and a landmark in Bartow.

This house is located between the Methodist & Baptist churches and I’m told it was the old Methodist parsonage, used until the mid-1960s.

Bartow Methodist Church, 1890s, Jefferson County

According to Lorraine Frederick Minton, whose great-great-great-grandfather, Francis Eugene Flanders founded the church, it was designed with a “Quaker Heart”. Flanders was a circuit rider. Her great-great-great-great-grandfather, Richard Drake, was the architect. She notes: It was originally built on the other side of the “swamp” and later pulled by oxen and placed on logs to cross the swamp and placed where it is today. The original church records are now reported to be stored at Lake Junaluska, NC.

Bartow UMC was organized on 18 July 18 1879. In the late 1890’s the church was moved into the town of Bartow. The original church building was torn down and rebuilt.

Constituted as the First Baptist Church, the congregation now simply calls itself Bartow Baptist Church. J. G. Gunter was the pastor at the time this structure was raised. The cornerstone lists the building committee as: J. R. O. Smith; A. S. Chamlee; N. A. Williams; T. C. Jordan; T. Y. Smith; G. H. Ratchford; and L. G. Smith.

Bartow Cemetery, Jefferson County

This is a beautiful cemetery, the resting place of many area pioneers. The stone gate was built in 1934, by popular subscription. A marble marker on the inside of the gates notes that members of the building committee were George B. Archer, Designer and Builder; Mrs. L. S. Smith, Chairman; Miss Mamie Kinman, Treasurer; and Miss Virginia Thomas, Secretary.
