Queen Anne House, Sparks

Warehouse, Lenox

I believe this was an oil distributor’s warehouse/office.

Historic Storefront, Lenox

Bay Conley, who works for the present owners of this building, notes that this was a furniture store at one time.

North Cook Elementary School Gymnasium, Lenox

Darrell Bennett writes: The gym wasn’t green at the time the school was in use. After the consolidation, the gym was used by the community. It was at this time it was painted.

Cannon House, Cook County

This is located near the historic Staunton community. Thanks to Ken Rountree for the identification.

Staunton Post Office, Circa 1890, Cook County

Today, Staunton is virtually indistinguishable from Lenox. It is located on the edge of the Lenox city limits and I understand that it was a historic railroad stop. The post office operated from 1890-1923, which probably mirrors the existence of the village as a separate entity. Two other important historic structures survive here: the Sim Harrell House and the T. P. Daughtrey House. Signage on U. S. Highway 41 distinguishes the neighborhood from Lenox proper.

Salem Primitive Baptist Church, 1859, Adel

A marker placed on the church by the John Howell, Sr. Chapter of the Colonial Dames of the 17th Century notes that this is the oldest church in Cook County. Constituted in July 1859, it was known for many years as the Lime Sink Church, for the mysterious lake located adjacent to the property and historically used by the congregation for baptisms. The so-called lime sink is a mystery because its source is unknown and analysis has never found any lime at the site.

Neoclassical Revival House, Circa 1900, Adel

Edward Godwin writes: This was once a hospital and the office of Dr. F.N. Clements.
