Findlay, Georgia

Other than the fact that a post office known as Findlay operated here from 1889-1905, I’ve not been able to track down more information about this lost community. Today, the only visible reminder of its past is this abandoned commercial structure, built by A. C. Bullinton in 1914. For much of its history, the building was home to Mrs. W. E. Porter’s General Merchandise store. A large agribusiness operation, Finley Gin Company, dominates the area today. Of course, there are variations in the spelling of the settlement’s name.

Pinehurst United Methodist Church, 1928, Dooly County

The Methodist Episcopal Church South established a congregation at Pinehurst in 1890, with the Reverend T. I. Nease as first pastor. The first church building was a wood frame structure that featured a belfry (full of pigeons, as the story goes). The present church was built in 1928.

Planters Warehouse, 1910, Pinehurst

Warehouses like this were once a feature in almost every South Georgia town, from the smallest villages to the cities.

Vernacular Office Building, Pinehurst

Now used as the office of Pinehurst Peanut & Grain, this small gable front structure likely served another purpose at an earlier time.

William Hardwick Byrom House, 1859, Byromville

Byromville, originally known as Friendship, was a stagecoach stop operated by Thomas Swearington. In 1852, Swearington sold the surrounding land to William Hardwick Byrom. Byrom built a large general store, which included a post office, and the name of the community was changed to honor him, in 1853. It was incorporated in 1905. This landmark Greek Revival Georgian Cottage remained in the Byrom family until 1992 and underwent a certified rehabilitation by the new owners thereafter.

Pyramidal Roof Cottage, Lilly

I’ve always liked this house and was amazed it was still someone’s home until very recently. It appears to have taken on some storm damage since the last time I was through Lilly.

Springhill Baptist Church, Circa 1910, Tippettville

This congregation dates to circa 1910.

Tippettville Baptist Church, Circa 1890, Dooly County

There is a parsonage on the property that  may serve a different purpose today, perhaps a social hall. It was built circa 1930.
